Finding Your Edge Without Losing Yourself
A personal journey from athlete to mental performance coach

Looking for mental performance coaching in Waterloo? Whether you’re an athlete, professional, or high achiever, the mental game often determines your success. As a therapist and former athlete, I understand the delicate balance between pushing your limits and preserving your wellbeing. This story explores how mental performance coaching can help you achieve your peak without sacrificing your authentic self.
The Journey: From Competitive Athlete to Mental Performance Coach
Growing up in a small, remote town, my sports options were limited. My dad, a towering 7-footer who played basketball, passed on his athletic drive (though sadly not his height), so basketball became my sport. I threw myself into it, finding a sense of identity in the squeak of sneakers on the court and the swish of a perfect shot. Without the right resources or competition, my journey ended in high school, but the athlete in me never really left.
When Performance Shapes Identity
That drive, that push to achieve – it’s part of why I became a therapist. I know what it’s like to have your self-worth tangled up in performance. I’ve sat with former athletes and high-achievers who pushed themselves to the breaking point, believing their value lay solely in their results. I’ve also seen those who had to step away from their sport or their career and felt like they lost a piece of themselves in the process.
A Personal Evolution in Mental Performance
So, when my daughter came along – a kid born with the coordination and fearlessness I’d only dreamed of – I had mixed feelings. I wanted her to have the freedom to push her limits, to set and achieve big goals. But I also worried about the pressure, the perfectionism, the potential burnout. She was climbing playground equipment at a year old, and by 18 months, we put her in a parent-and-tot gymnastics class just to burn off some of that boundless energy.
She took to gymnastics immediately. She was the kid who would see a skill and keep at it until she got it, no fear, just grit. So when she asked to join the competitive stream, I hesitated. I knew the stakes. I see the downside in my practice – former athletes with relentless inner critics, professionals who struggle to step off the treadmill of constant achievement, or parents who want their kids to excel without breaking under the weight of expectations.
Mental Performance Coaching: Beyond the Physical
In her first year, she came 4th at provincials. She was ecstatic. I could see that fire – the same fire that drove me as a kid – and it felt like a full-circle moment. But then, in her second year, she skipped two levels and suddenly faced bigger skills, bigger expectations, and a lot more pressure. She started to hit a wall, especially on the uneven bars. She had the physical ability, but something was blocking her mentally.
It’s not just about winning or achieving – it’s about finding that fire and holding onto it. It’s about reaching your peak without burning out, without breaking, without losing yourself.

Because it’s not just about winning or achieving – it’s about finding that fire and holding onto it. It’s about reaching your peak without burning out, without breaking, without losing yourself. It’s about pushing for that next level without letting your achievements define your worth.
Embracing Excellence Through Mental Performance
This isn’t just for young athletes. It’s for the high-achieving professionals who push themselves to exhaustion. It’s for the entrepreneur who can’t turn their brain off. It’s for anyone who wants to excel without feeling like they have to sacrifice their mental health to get there.
It’s okay to want to achieve. In fact, it’s more than okay – it’s a beautiful thing. But you don’t have to crush your spirit or compromise your well-being to get there. You can be a high-achiever without the burnout. You can be driven without being consumed.
And if that resonates, we should talk.
